Fall Meet ‘03

Well, the September meet has come and gone. We had decent weather both days with just a little bit of rain Saturday afternoon, but all in all, a very nice weekend of racing. Yet once again, the Maxton Track Record was broken. This time a super run of 242+ MPH on Sunday by Wayne Pollack, aboard the #8 Budweiser bike of Rich Yancy. Wayne started out with a 237+ MPH tune up run and kept getting a little faster with each pass, and he did, finally setting the APS/BF-3000 Record at a Super Fast 242 .587 MPH. Super job, Rich and Wayne!
Of course “Mr Motorcycle” Scott Guthrie showed up with several of his bikes and just about has a lock on this year’s point’s race. He also helped another fellow racer get into the ECTA 200 MPH Club! This time it was Jason McVicar with a super pass of 207+MPH in the

SIBG 2000 class. Jason went on to up the record to 212+ MPH before the weekend was out. Scott had a great run of 221+ MPH in the S/BG 3000 class aboard bike #1117. This was the second fastest record of the weekend. Also, Jay Barker, riding one of Mr. Guthrie’s many bikes, set the S/F-300 Record at a fast 207+ MPH. A good weekend for the Scott Guthrie Racing Team!

The Twin Jugs Racing Team, with Todd Dross and Debbie “DahMurf” Heneman, were back racing with Murfs restored 250 Harley single. She was able to set the A/PG 250 Record up to 64+ MPH. Not as fast as the little bike will go, but not bad at all for the ‘68 model Harley Sprint. Twin Jugs Racing, Rosemary Pennell, had her little Harley 250 Sprint out again. She was not able to improve on her current Record in P/PP-250 but had several decent passes out of the old Harley.

Don Smith a freelance journalist that has written for magazines such at Sport Rider, Motorcycle Consumer News as well as Dragbike.com made his first ride at Maxton count. Don who is based out of Chattanooga, TN had two project bikes here in the past but both of those were ridden by professional riders (Barry Henson, and Lee Shierts). This time Don piloted his own stock 2003 Yamaha R6 that is also part of an upcoming article on Dragbike.com. In his first Maxton run he was able to set several records over the weekend. His best was a fast 159+ MPH in APS/BG - 650/4. Don hopes to be back for the October meet and go even faster on the R6 and a new Kawasaki ZX-12 Turbo.
Mark “Mr. Clean” Wolniak was back in the Record setting form with his ‘95 Kawasaki ZX7RR-750. He was able to set a couple or Records in the 169+ MPH range. One record was in the APS/BF-750 and the other in the APS/BG-750. Good job Mark!
In The Middle Racing, Thomas Cronan, had his little 250 Honda Rebel running well again. And again, the young man was able to set a new Record with a fast run of 88+ MPH in A/G250/4. New to In the Middle Racing was racing was mate, Linda Aley, also on a Honda Rebel 250, set the P/PS-250/4 Record at 69+ MPH. Not bad for her first time on the course! Thomas also got to ride Snarts Racing #7625 entry, 883cc Sportster and set the MPSIGPG-1000 Record at a fast 129+ MPH. I believe this is his best speed yet! Good job guys and gals!
Rick Denham had his Gregory Town Racing Sportster back out again, and again set
his own Record in MPSIPF-l 350 up. This time Rick coaxed a fast 151+ MPH out of the bike, which was good for the Record. Then he left friend Mark Wolniak have a crack at it and Mark reset it at a fast 154+ MPH.

Another new racer to Maxton was David Meyer, riding a POCKET bike, owned by Frank Giannini. The very little Blata made a fast run of 63+ MPH for the Record in APS/G-50/2 class. Far Out!
Lone Eagle Racing’s, Mike Shedd, aboard his 500cc Buell Blast, set a couple of new Records over the weekend. His best speed was 98+ MPH for the Record in S/P-500/4/ Also, Chris “Dad” Land, was back running his 1973 Altered Sportster. Dad didn’t set a Record this meet, but as far as I know, didn’t catch on fire either!
The OFOS team of Jim Cannon, Ken Weaver, TJ Cannon, William Van Dyke and Kevin Unphlett had 5 bikes entered this meet and was able to set a couple of Records. Ken Weaver ran a fast 186+ MPH for the Record in S/G-2000 and William VanDyke was able to get 103+ MPH out of a unique twin engine Harley, for the Record in A/PG- 3001. This Team is having a lot of fun this year!
Tim Holder made his first Maxton runs aboard his 2002 Yamaha RI 1000cc Motorcycle. He didn’t set any records but got some good seat time and his D License. Speeds will

improve with a little more time on the track.
Last of the bikes is the Paul & Karen Batts racing Buell H.D. I guess they had problems out of this very fast Buell because they were not able to get a pass in. To bad, I hope that they can repair and be back in October. Well, that’s all the bikes, now on to the cars!
We had several fast cars this meet, and several fast cars that broke a few parts. While concrete does improve traction, it can be harder on driveline parts! ECTA 200 MPH Club member and SCTA regular, Calvin Smith, had his streamliner back out at Maxton for the first time in a few years, Unfortunately, something broke on the good looking car on the first pass and he was unable to repair it at the track. To bad!

Bob Gribble had his1986 Mercury Merkur running very well this meet. He has installed his 366 cubic inch NASCAR engine in the little car and it paid off with a great 203+ MPH run. This is the new record in C/GALT, and it’s the fastest run ever at Maxton with a REAL door car! Good Job!
Jeff Issacs had his freshly painted mellow yellow Roll Cage Racing ‘69 Camaro back out again. He was trying to take over the #1 spot in the points race, and set a new record with the ‘01 Camaro. Well, he accomplished both with a great run of 189+ MPH for the record in B/CBFLAT class and a slim lead in the points! One more race to qo!
Keith Turk and Tonya Hanley had Keith’s modified sports car running at Maxton for the first time. The car had a solid rear and like to jump around a little bit on the concrete. After several passes in the car, Keith reeled off
a decent 185+ MPH run that was good for the record in D/BFMS. It also keeps his and Tonya’s points hopes alive.

Brett and Regan Yates had there ‘92 Firebird out again, and again set a new record, this time with a best speed of 184+ MPH and this also keeps them in the points race if the two leaders take the next race off!
Bill Rynd and Ken Davidson had Bill’s ‘29 Ford Roadster running well again. The ole Flathead cranked out a run of 130+ MPH and was good for the Record in B/BFR. Bill’s son Jousha didn’t drive this time but did help out in the Timing Tower most of the weekend.
Tom Burch was back down from Iowa with his 3 cly. Chevy Metro. He had made some changes over the summer and was looking for a 120+ MPH run. His first run was a fast 112+ MPH and good for the record in l/BMS. Unfortunately, he holed a piston and was able to improve on his speed this meet. Still a great run for such a small engine.
A new entry and member to Maxton is the Lakester (Belly Tank) of Steve DiMartino. This is a very neat car and is powered by a 2000 model Honda car engine, 120 cubic inches, with a 6 speed transmission. After a few passes, Steve was able to run a fast 163+ MPH for the record in G/GL. Hope he comes back before long!
Another new member and car was the entry of Ed Brace and his Braces Green House Racing '32 Ford Street Roadster. He also put in a few practice laps and ended up running a fast 139+ MPH! Good for the record in C/BSTR. Good Job guys!

Shane “Dammit” Roberts and Dad Clem, had Shane’s 2003 Hyundai Tibaron back in action. This time out Shane set a new Record at 135+ MPH! The “No Class Racing” Team has done a lot of work on this car to bring it up to safety standards and are planning a lot of engine work over the winter! The Watson and Weldon Team had their ‘28 Ford Roadster back down from Canada. They had installed a “new” 438 nailhead engine and Gary Weldon drove it to a new 167+ MPH Record in B/GR before clutch problems set in. A very good run by a uncommon engine.
Chuck Panner was here again with his ‘82 Camaro. And again he left with a new Record, this time he was able to run a fast 169+ MPH with his “Second Childhood” Racing entry. This run also keeps him in pretty good shape in the points race.
Don Biglow and New driver, Member, Sandy Shoemaker, had Don’s big block Chevy blown street Roadster down for a few runs. Sandy made a couple of license passes, while Don set he A/BSTR Record at a fast 148+ MPH. Randy Dupree had his neat little Fiat Comp Coupe running well again, with Luke Scanlan
running a super 157+ MPH for a new Record and the fastest run yet for the 4 cyl. powered car.
Bob Bergner drove his late model Corvette back down from Kentucky again for a couple of runs and another new record. This time he ran a fast 143+ MPH for the mark in AA/MS. There’s talk that Bob may end up in a full time race car next year!
Graeme “Rabbit aka Squirrel” Bartils had his lime green roadster running pretty good this meet. The GMP die cast models racing “32 Ford went a fast 171+ MPH for the new record in A/FR. Rabbit is still having a few transmission problems and should go faster next race.
Lawson Bilhardt had his 1990 Ford T-bird back out again and he’s still dialing in the new engine combo that he’s installed. When he gets it all straightened out it should be back in the Record setting form.

New members, Hal and Chris Copple had their neat Cobra kit car out for the first time. While the car is super neat, it does need a few safety up-grades to go real fast. They were still able to get their license upgraded and have a great time. With a little work on the roll bar, etc. they can open it up at a later date.
Philip Franz had his Koeing Bros. Racing ‘87 Camaro back in action and while unable to set his B/BGALT Record up any, still had some very strong runs, the best being a 161+ MPH shot.
S&T Racings, Tom Southard and Sandy Sainz. Had their little MGB Roadster back out for the first time in a while. Their best run of the weekend was a stout 94+ MPH. Not hardly good enough for the Record, but not bad for a nearly stock MG.

New member Mark Brenchley, had his ‘86 Modle Nissian V6 300ZX out to play for the first time. His best time was a fast 149+ MPH that would have been good enough for the Record, but he didn’t make it to impound in time. Oh well, maybe next race he’ll be a Record holder!

Last of the cars is the “Eh Team” of Scott Cowle. Scott lives in Ontario, Canada, and only makes one race a year. His ‘72 modle Duster had a new 500 cubic inch Dodge crate engine in it and sounded very good and strong. Try as he might though, he was only able to run 167+ MPH, a little off his own Record. He’s talking about building a sleeker car and maybe taking it to B-ville next year. Good luck!
Well, all in all, a very good meet. It was also a safe meet. Thanks to everyone who helped with track clean up and all the other jobs involved in putting on a great meet See ya soon!
