Bonneville Tune-Up Meet ‘03
Well, the June “Bonneville Tune-Up” meet has come and gone! We had pretty good weather, just HOT, and another very safe meet! Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out in the “Heat of the day”!
It appeared Saturday that the heat was taking its toll on big MPH numbers. While we had several records set Saturday, people were still looking for more MPH. Well, Sunday morning rolled around and things started to happen in a hurry.
First, we had three new members enter the ECTA's 200 MPH club. Jim Owen, riding a

Kawasaki, Jon Wennerberg also riding a Kawasaki, and Brett Yates, in Bob Hustlers fast Thunderbird! Also, Top Speed of the meet and new Maxton Monster Mile track Record , went to Wayne Pollack, aboard Rich Yancy’s # 8B, Budwieser Suzuki Hyabusa “Street” bike, with a great 236.723 MPH shot! Wayne had already run 233+ MPH and 235+ MPH in route to the 236 blast! This is also the record in MPS/BF-3000! Rich has done an absolutely great job with the bike. I for one, thought that the 235+ MPH speed set by Larry Forstall and Steve Knecum last year, would stand for a long, long time. All of this was done in the heat of the day also. Great job Rich & Wayne! By the way, Rich had a great 220+ MPH run himself earlier in the day! He can ride & build horse power!
Motorcycle points leaders, Scott Guthrie Racing, with Scott “Mr.Motorcycle” Guthrie and Wayne “The Speedster” Pollack had 4 bikes entered for this meet! Three of them were Suzuki Busas and one Kawasaki. All four bikes set records at over 200 MPH. Bike 1117, with Guthrie aboard went 219+ MPH in the S/BG-1650 class. Entry # 1114, with Wayne Pollack riding went 210+MPH in the APS/F-3001 class. Bike 3B had a best speed of 217+ MPH in APS/BG-3000, again with Scott ridding, and the slow one of the bunch was still a great 197+ MPH on bike # 1111, the Kawasaki in S/F-1000/4. While Scott and Wayne had a great weekend, I think that Scott may have put a hole or two in a couple of pistons. Good job, Gentlemen.

Jim Owen made his first trip back down to Maxton in a couple of years, and one to remember. He had several decent runs Saturday with his 2000 model ZX-12R Kawasaki Super Bike, but finally got on the money Sunday with a great run of 201+ MPH in MPS/F-3001. That also was good for a lifetime membership into the ECTA's 200 MPH Club! He could have loaded and went home, but Wayne Pollack had gone out and ran a 209+ MPH run in the same class. Well, Jim wanted that record and with a little help from Wayne “The Speedster” Pollack, Jim went back out and just did best Wayne's best speed at 209.146. A great weekend for Jim, and entry # 519.
Next into the 200 MPH Club was Jon Wennerberg and the Seldom Seen Slim Land Speed Racing entry # 436, 2000 model Hot Rod Kawasaki. Jon was another that had decent runs on Saturday, but really stepped it up on Sunday. Entered in the MPS/BF-3001 class, Jon's best speed was a very fast 203+ MPH run. Jon & Nancy (from way up north) will be going to Bonneville with this bike and hopefully all goes well! Speaking of Nancy Wennerberg, she had her little 250 Kawasaki entry # 1478, on hand for this meet. The little 247cc bike had a best speed of 102+ MPH. Nancy set 3 new records while riders Jon W. and Thomas Cronan set one record each. Not a bad weekend at all for the Wennerbergs! Yes, Thomas Cronan did ride the Wennerberg bike, but he also had his own little 250 Honda Rebel back in action. This meet Thomas went a fast 87+ MPH for the M/BF-250/4 Record! Thomas is having a ball with his “In The Middle Racing” entry # 2207, and has set Records at all four meets so far this year! GOOD JOB!
|
|
Paul & Karen Batts had their Batts Racing entry # 2801, back in action and had a good weekend out of the 1998 Buell Harley Davidson entry. Paul and Karen took off the familiar white body work on their bike and entered a naked class, M/PG-1350. (Editors Note, Paul & Karen had their clothes on, the bike was naked!) Well, good for them, because Paul was able to get a new Record at a fast 157+ MPH. A very good speed for the Batts Racing entry!
Mark "Mr. Clean" Wolniak, had his entry # 698, The Wolniak Racing 2001, 1000cc Suzuki back in action. Mark again set a new Record with a best speed of 181+ MPH on this good looking motorcycle. Mark was entered in the S/G-1350 class and should be holding his own in this year’s point’s race.
Jim "Snydley" Snyder and Art Northrup had "Whiplash" the hard running 2001 model HD Sportster entry # 506 back out to the Monster Mile again. Art built the engine in this bike. They had the bike entered in APS/PBG-2000 and Jim reset the record at a fast 162+ MPH. Art says to expect a lot more from this bike before the year is over!
SNART Racing's Larry "SNAL" (Skinny, No-Azz Larry) Young, had his good looking, red 883 Sportster out as usual and the team set a new Record with the # 7625 entry. This time it was rider Lee Tindall riding to a fast 128+ MPH in MPS/PF-1000 class. Good going guys!
Also back for the first time in a couple of years was Ursula Tullberg AKA: "SpeedGoddess”. She had a couple of 50cc motorcycles entered by owner Robert Galley of “Barefoot Racing” on entry # 669, a little 2000 model Aprilia 2 stroke, on which Ursula was able to set 3 new Records with a best speed of 69+ |
|
MPH in P/P-50/2. "Speed Goddess" indeed!
Rosemary Pennell had her good looking, fully restored, 1967 HD Sprint 250 back out again. This time out she had the Twin Jugs entry # 936, bike entered in the P/P-250/4 class. Her best speed of the weekend was a fast 79+ MPH, good enough for the record. It was hard to find parts for these bikes when they were new, must be super tough now! Rosemary's friend and the ECTA web master "The Murf," Debbie Heneman, also had her 250 HD Sprint out again after burning a spark plug last month. "Murf" was entered in the M/PG-250/4 class where her best speed was a fast 78+ MPH. Not quite good enough for the Record, but dang close for the # 1301 entry. Both the 250 Harley Sprints were built by Todd Dross of Twin Jugs Racing. So, if you have one of these rare bikes and need some help, Todd's the man!
Todd Brooks had his 'Double Busa" Racing entry # 842 Suzuki back out again. Todd has set several records over the 200 MPH mark, but was unable to set any of them up this meet.
Jim Reed had his 1973 Yamaha 350cc Motorcycle entry # 853 out for the first time this year. Jim was entered in the APS/F-350/2 class where his best speed was a 113+ MPH run on a 122+ MPH Record. Not bad for the first time out this year!
Lone Eagle Racing Chris "Dad" Land and Mike "NO Muffler" Shedd had their bikes out to race again. "Dad" is getting ready for his trip to Bonneville and was testing some new work on his 1973 Harley XLCH. Dad's running in the A/PF-1000 class and was able to get a best run of 139+ MPH out of the # 566 entry before he had problems. At least we didn't have to put the fire this time! "Dad" will be ready to up his B-ville Record in August! Good Luck!
Mike Shedd had his entry # 10B, 500cc Buell running in the S/PG-500 class. Mike burnt a coil up and couldn't find one, so his weekend ended with a best speed of 79+ MPH. He also still has no Dam muffler! Rick "Slide" Denham had his good looking, yellow 1990 XLH 883 Sportster, entry # 346 back out as is the norm. What's not normal is the fact that Rick was unable to ride the Gregory Town Racing entry to a new Record. Rick ran as fast as a 149+ MPH, which is not bad at all, just not good enough for |
|
the record. Better luck in September.
Mad Dawg Motorsports entry # 9300 a 2003 Suzuki Hyabusa, and owned by Thomas "Mad Dawg" Barker had a forgettable weekend. Thomas has been improving with each meet and thought that he had a real chance to get in the 200 MPH Club this meet. It was not to be though as the good looking Suzuki pushed some parts out of the engine. "Mad Dawg's" top speed this meet was a 182+ MPH. Hope they can repair and be back in September!
Last of the motorcycles were the four entrees of OFOS (Old Farts On Speed) of Jim Cannon, Ken Weaver, TJ Cannon, Kevin Umphlett, Al Dismore, Dale Thomas, William Van Dyke, among others. The best speed of the group was entry # 922, with a182+ MPH run with Kevin Umphlett aboard. Entry # 922 is a 2003 Suzuki Busa. Entry # 1241, a 1991 750 Suzuki went a fast 152+ MPH with TJ Cannon as the rider. Entry # 1240, a '91 model Harley Davidson XL, went a fast 143+ MPH with Al Dismore aboard, last is the entry # 1058, A 1987 Suzuki 750cc motorcycle. This bike went 154+ MPH, again with Kevin Umphlett as the rider. Though they set no Records, the team is in pretty good shape points wise. Well, that's it for the bikes. On to the 4 wheel machines!
Bob Hustler had his “Hustler Racing” Ford Thunder Bird back out again, and again, set top car speed with a great 212+ MPH shot in C/FCT. Bob’s entry # 849 T-bird just keeps getting a little faster every meet. And if that was not enough, Bob let Brett Yates make a couple of laps in his car, and before the weekend was over, Brett got into the ECTA’s 200 MPH Club with a best run of 203+ MPH. Good going Bret and Bob! By the way, this car and or engine is |
|
for sale.
Chuck Panner was back for the 4th meet in a row with his “Second Childhood”, entry # 790, ‘83 Camaro, and as usual set a new record with his car. This time he went a fast 154+ MPH in E/BFCC. Chuck will also have his Camaro out at B-ville! Good Luck!
Randy Dupree & Luke Scanlan, had the “Dupree Racing” Entry # 846, Fiat Comp Coupe running again after having engine problems last month. Luke was able to set the F/BCC record at 135+ MPH. Not bad at all for the 4 cyl boat motor! There thinking of going to Bonneville to race. Good Luck!
Tom Bruch had his “Bruch Metro” entry # 903, Chevy Metro 3 cylinder back down from Iowa. You would just have to see all the work that Tom does to these little engines to appreciate what it takes to make one of them run. Tom was able to set 2 new Records with the car before the clutch and other problems set in. Tom’s friend, Mike Cove, was able to push up the Econo Box to 115+ MPH for the new Record in I / BGALT. Good job guys!
Clem Roberts and son, Shane “Dammit” Roberts, had both their race vehicles down from Tennessee. Clem’s U/DT, entry # 4331, only made one pass, at a fast 166+ MPH. This was good for the record, but Clem hurt the engine and is trying to get another one ready for B-ville. I hope he makes it! “Dammit” had his “New” 2003 Hyundai back out again, and this time he had a full cage and other safety equipment installed for runs over 125+ MPH. It paid off when Dammit was able to up the F/GSS to 132+ MPH. Not bad at all for the # 9203 entry!
Andy & Tiffany Anderson had their good looking “67 Nova running very well this meet. Between the 2 of them, they were able to set 5 new Records! The fastest speed for entry # 878 was 158+ MPH in A/GSS! Tiffany’s best run was a fast 150+ MPH for the new record in AA/FSS! There going to B-ville, I’m not sure if they are taking the Nova or not, but anyway, good luck!
Glenn Majors made his first trip to Maxton since last year a successful one! Glenn’s
M & H Racing 1967 Pontiac Firebird, entry # 439, was able to set 3 new Records at this meet with a best run of 142+ MPH in B/CBGC! Good going!
|
|
Dennis Zainfield and Jay Bell, had their little ‘76 Ford Courier, C/MMP, entry # 238 running very well this meet, and was able to set the Record up to a fast 169+ MPH! That’s moving in a mini truck! Good job guys!
Bob “Doc” Bergner had his “Midas Gold Touch Racing” ‘94 Model Corvette out again, and again, the entry # 9206 was able to set a new record. This time it was a run of 143+ MPH for the new Record in AA/GT! Nice work “Doc”!
Bob Gribble had 2 cars entered this meet. The “Muscle Motorsports” entry # 9213, a 1986 model Mercury Merkur, was entered in C/BGC and was able to up the record to 168+ MPH! This is the car that Bob’s planning on taking it to B-ville with the engine out of his NASCAR T-bird. This should be “Bad Fast”! Good luck Bob!
Bill Rynd had his ‘29 Ford Roadster running good and with Ken Davidson driving, was able to set the C/BFR Record at 130+ MPH. This run also keeps the entry # 560 in pretty good shape points wise!
Peggy Hill had her new 2003 Mini Cooper, entry # 7241, out for the first time this year. The little “Vincent & Peggy Racing” car was able to set the G/PS Record at a fast 120+ MPH with Peggy behind the wheel! Vincent didn’t bring his fast “Mean Green” Kawasaki this trip, but made a few laps in the Mini Cooper! Good going!

|
Gerald Davenport had his good looking 1946 Crosley Comp Coupe to Maxton for the first time. I’ve seen this little car at B-ville for several years and it always looks great! Anyway, Gerald was able to set the J/GCC Record at 81+ MPH! Not bad at all for the tiny 1950 Crosley 4 cyl engine! Good luck at B-ville guys!
Chad Bolles and Pat McCutcheon had their ‘95 Model Jaguar V-12 out for the first time this year, and before the weekend was over, had set the AA/BGSS Record up to a fast 142+ MPH, with Pat driving. This is one good looking car, and not bad at all for the fully street legal entry # 9218!
Keith Turk had his ole Camaro, entry #462, running well this meet. With driver Tonya Hanley, they were able to set the C/CBFALT record up to a fast 176+ MPH. This was Tonya’s best speed to date and keeps the #462 entry in the Number 1 spot in the years points race (cars). Keith also let John Beckett’s son, John-Gordon, make a couple of runs in the Camaro and J-G was able to run a fast 161+ MPH on his third pass for his “ C ” license and also the Record in A/CBFALT! John-Gordon is also planning his first trip to B-ville this year. Good Luck, JG! Keith also brought out his “New”
|
|
Modified Sports Race car that he’s trying to get ready for B-ville. He’s putting his all Alum. “D“ engine in it and hopes to be ready in time to go. Good Luck, Keith!
Jeff Isaacs had his “Roll Cage Racing” 1969 Camaro, entry # 1069, running very well this meet. Jeff was able to get a fast pass of 182+ MPH for the Record in B/CBFALT. This also puts Jeff in the No # 2 position in the point’s race! Looks like it’s going to be a real battle between Keith Turk and Jeff Isaacs. Good Luck Guys! Jeff is also trying to get this car ready for B-ville!
Brett and Regan Yates had their “Yates Racing” 1992 Fire Bird out for the last tune-up runs before B-ville. And while they had a little too much gear in the car, Regan still had a pass of 175+ MPH. This pass also moves the entry # 252 in to 3rd place in this years points race! Good luck at B-ville guys!
Lawson Bilhardt and had his “Black Bird SC” entry # 863 , out for some test runs before B-ville and had bad luck on his first pass when something let go in the engine. Let’s hope he is able to repair and be ready for B-ville!
“Wasted Willie” Glass had his good looking ‘29 Ford Roadster out for the first time this year. This was just some “break in” runs for the 292 cubic inch Ardun Power plant. Willie’s best speed of the weekend was a very decent pass of 158+ MPH. Of course Willie was looking for a little more out of the #450 entry, and I’m sure he will find it by B-ville time! Good Luck Willie!
Nicholous Stewart had his little “Stewart Racing” Briggs powered go-cart running pretty good this meet. He was able to run a fast 100+ MPH with the No# 665 entry. Nicholous & Duncan are planning a trip to B-ville in September, at the USFRA’s event! Good Luck!
Jim Gray made his first trip to Maxton with his “New” ‘88 model Chevy Truck, entry #9217. After his license passes and so forth, Jim was able to run 137+ MPH with the good looking truck. Not bad at all and I think that the Team will improve in the near future!
|
|
Philip Franz had his “Koenig Brothers Racing” ‘87 Camaro back out again. The good looking Entry # 1029 was able to run a best speed of 147+ MPH this event. Not bad, but I know that Philip and crew are still looking for more!
Last of the cars is the entry # 638 of Jack Jones. This was Jacks first trip back to Maxton this year with his 1969 Corvette. This is a road race car with a 427 big block for power. Jack’s best speed was a fast 174+ MPH, but not what Jack was looking for. Still not bad though, and maybe he’ll hit the 200 MPH mark next meet!
Well, that’s it for the entries this meet! Over all, not a bad weekend! Just a little hot! We wish everyone going to Bonneville Good Luck! See you in September! Later, Lionel

Well, it’s B-ville time again! I really don’t know how many ECTA folks will be at Bonneville this year, but it’s going to be a lot! Here’s a list of the ones that I’m pretty sure of, Willie Glass, Chuck Panner, Brett & Regan Yates, Randy Dupree, Keith Turk and Tonya Hanley, Lawson Billhardt, “Dad” Land, Scott Guthrie, Todd Dross, Jeff Isaacs, Graeme “Rabbit” Bartils, Tom Bruch, Bob Hustler, Andy & Tiffany Anderson, Gerald Davenport, Clem & Dammit Roberts, Bob Gribble, Jon & Nancy Wennerberg, Greg Samson, Duncan & Nicholous Stewart, and I’m sure others. The Beckett, Williams, & Timney Team will also be there, hopefully with the new #79 Honda Comp Coupe, and the # 251 Pickup truck. John is working around the clock to get the Comp

Coupe finished in time and Scott Griswold is working on the A/MP truck. Joe Timney is hard at work on headers for the truck, gas tanks and other items for the Honda.
If you are planning a trip to B-ville with your race car or bike, please let me know, and we will try and save some pit spaces for everyone so we can pit together. Either call me at (404) 433-9306 or E-mail me at ECTA251@AOL.com . Looks like we are going to have a crowd and it should be fun!
Also, there’s the 4th Annual “Bend in the Road party”, held by the Amo Brothers “Salt Talk” and the ECTA. This will be Sunday August 17th @ 6:00pm, at the excess road to the Salt Flats. Please plan on attending and shooting some BS. Also, you may want to bring a lawn chair.
Last, as everyone that attended the last meet knows, Joe Timney’s sister passed away just days before the last meet. I know that everyone really missed Joe and we send our condolences to the family.
In Joe’s absence, we had a lot of Volunteers to step up and make the Timing run pretty well. We missed a few runs, but all in all, things went better than I had expected. So, Thanks to EVERYONE who had a hand in helping out this meet, it means a lot to us all!
Thanks, Lionel

I’m sorry to say, but the “Trashiest Award” this month goes to “Pre-Staging”. There were Red solo cups, 22oz water bottles, and crushed Mountain Dew cans everywhere! If you can’t take the HEAT of the day to stay late when it’s all over and pick up the trash, PLEASE do not throw it down for others to pick up after you.
We have finally found an honest, dependable food vender with quality food. Lets all take advantage of this, so as to keep this one!

The Web Zone
In case you didn’t know it, the ECTA has
|

a web site. Its address is www.ecta-lsr.com. I’ve been working hard in my spare time to get it up to date and accurate. If you have any questions, requests, suggestions or corrections, they should be sent to webslave@ecta-lsr.com. We are not accepting complaints at this time! :)
I’ve added some new pages & features so here’s a little explanation on what I’m trying to accomplish:
- Cars & Bikes picture pages are intended to show the vehicles not the people. They are listed in order by number on one page & grouped by team on the other.
- People pages are to help you get acquainted with your officials & to highlight & thank the many volunteers.
- The records & points pages have links on the vehicle numbers to the picture on the Cars & Bikes page. This is so you can see which vehicle has the points or was used to set the record that’s why it’s linked under the vehicle number. They are not intended to show who made the record.
- We are going to start collecting & displaying a head & shoulders (bust) shot of each 200 mph club member.
- At this time there are no plans to display pictures of each individual driver/rider. If that changes I’ll let everyone know!
- The Team Name listed on the web is taken directly from your registration form. What ever you put in ENTRY is what we consider your team name.
- The person listed next to the current points is the person that completed the fastest run for the meet that netted the vehicle the points. It is not always necessary to set a record to achieve points.
- If you don’t have access to the web, I leave a copy of the printed web site on the registration table for your viewing pleasure.
All of the pictures were begged, borrowed, stolen or taken from my personal collection. They are all chosen and displayed at my discretion. If your picture isn’t there & you want it to be, send me one! If you take pictures at an event we have an event pictures page. Send me
|
|
pictures & I’ll post some. If you don’t have digital pictures I usually have a scanner at the track. Bring the pics with you & stop by the Twin Jugs Racing trailer. I’ll scan them & hand them right back.
If there are any errors in the spelling of names let me know and I’ll get them updated as soon as I can but please be patient. There are a lot of pages that have to change when someone’s name has been wrong for a while. (This is why you want to complete your registration forms completely & accurately!)
Lastly, our Volunteers page is grossly under populated! If you've got any pictures of volunteers caught in the act, I want them! If you don't, go get some! These people work hard and deserve our hearty thanks & the recognition due! Stop & take some pictures next meet & send them in!
Happy surfing,

Seems we have a Volunteer problem. Which could get out of hand, and then it’s gonna effect the racing. We have some members who don’t volunteer at all, some who volunteer sometimes (when they can) and some who volunteer all the time. Unfortunately the all the time people are getting burned out.
The bigger we get the more work there is and seems like fewer people to do the work.
We need people to help with Tech Inspection, Starting Line, Shutdown, Timing, Course Stewards, Gate, Impound, Time Slips, Sales, Course Set-Up, Course Repair, and End of Meet Clean-Up.
Please volunteer and help spread the load out a little.
