ECTA’s May Meet

What a great meet! We finally had two great days of racing without any rain what so ever! This was another very safe meet, with no incidents on the race coarse. Again Suzuki and Ford provided the 200+ MPH runs. Scott Guthrie again had top speed with his best speed ever at Maxton, 228+ MPH with a back door of 231+ MPH.
Bob Hustler put his NASCAR T-Bird on top of the cars again with a 210+ MPH blast! Thanks to everyone that came out and made this such a great race!
Mr. Motorcycle, AKA “The Sultan of Speed” Scott Guthrie had five bikes entered this weekend. Entry # 1117, a 2000 Model Busa, was the fastest of the lot. Early Sunday morning in the cool air, Scott reeled of a great run at 224+ MPH. Happy but knowing there was more left, Scott went back to the line and held on for a great 228.449 MPH run, which is also the new record in APS/BF-2000! Then he puts teammate Wayne Pollack on the same bike and Wayne rips off a great 225+ MPH run for the new standard in APS/BF-1350! All in all, the Scott Guthrie Racing Team accounted for 8 new records, the points lead, and fast speed of the meet! Not bad for the old man.
Guy Caputo was back for his second meet of the year with his Tiger Racing entry # 3135 a 2001 Suzuki Busa. At the March meet, Guy had run a fast 199+ MPH but had hurt his engine and was not able to go 200 MPH. Well, all’s better now with 3 new records and a lifetime membership in the ECTA’s 200 MPH Club. Guy’s first record and the green hat run was a 210+ MPH blast in MPS/F-3001. He also set records in APS/F- 3001 and APS/F-3000! He seemed Happy! Guy also has a great web site called Dragbike.com that covers a lot of Motorcycle Racing including Maxton. Check it out! Congrats, Guy!
Todd Brooks had his 2000 model Haybusa back out. The Double Busa entry # 842 had several runs over 200 MPH, but no records. Well,

Mr. Brooks and Todd Dross took all the fairing off and entered into the M/BF-1650 class late Sunday. Good idea because Todd Dross rode the bike to a new record of 202+ MPH!
The Seldom Seen Slim Land Speed Racing Team of Jon and Nancy Wennerberg made the long trip down from “Way Up North” and picked up their 2000 Kaw 1270 cc motorcycle. It has a lot of new bodywork and engine work and this was just some shake down runs. But before the weekend was over, entry # 436 had set 2 new records in the M/G-1350 and M/F-1350 with a best speed of 185+ MPH! Nancy hopes to have her turbo 250 Kawasaki at the next meet!
Mark Wolniak brought a couple of bikes up with him for this event. One is a “New” ’94 model ZX7RR-750. With this entry # 673, Mark was able to set 2 new Records with a top speed of 168+ MPH in MPS/G-750. Mark also ran a fast 176+ MPH on his Entry # 698, a 2001 Suzuki GSXR-1000!
Rich Yancy had his bright red Budweiser # 8 entry back out to go fast. He had the fast time of the year at 224+ MPH before Guthrie took it away Sunday morning. Rich’s best run of the weekend was a smoking 221+ MPH run Sunday morning that was a great run, but not what Rich is looking for. Should be interesting to see who ends up with Top Speed of the year between Yancy and Guthrie!
The Sportster List Race Team had a couple of bikes entered for this event. Guess what? They were both Sportsters! The first was entry # 1012, a 2001 883 Hugger Sportster, running in P/PP-1000 class. Rider Ray Kimbro was able to up the record to a fast 141+ MPH on this bike. Ray also rode the “New” 506 entry “Whiplash” to a new record of 163+ MPH in APS/PBF-1650 class. Engine builder Art Northrup expects a lot more out of this entry in the near future.
The Old Farts On Speed (OFOS) Team of Jim “Keno” Cannon, Ken Weaver, TJ Cannon, Kevin Umphlett, Dale Thomas, Bill Van Dyke and a host of others were on hand again. They entered a total of five bikes and made a lot of runs over the weekend. There fastest run was a 183+ MPH blast by Jim “Closing his Flapper” Cannon for the record in S/F-1350 on entry # 922, a Suzuki Busa.
New to Maxton was the dual engine entry of Bill Van Dyke. He had a couple a problems and was not able to run the bike this meet, but thanks to Jim Cannon and Ken Weaver, was able to get a few runs on the “Monster Mile” with their bikes.

Kevin Umphlett and TJ Cannon swapped the record back and forth in S/BG-1000 all day Saturday and Sunday with Kevin finally getting it at a fast 152+ MPH on Entry # 1058, a 1987 Suzuki 750. Good Job Guys!
The Lone Eagle Racing Team of Chris “Dad” Land and Mike “No Muffler” Shedd had a total of 3 bikes entered this meet. Dad is getting the first runs on his Iron Head Sportster Entry # 4B. He’s done a lot of work to the world’s fastest naked Iron head and is getting ready for a trip back out to B-ville to try and set the record even higher! Mike had his 2001 Buell 500cc back out and was able to get a record at 82+ MPH. Still not what Mike’s looking for from the # 10B entry, but getting there. The Long Eagle Team, along with new member and rider Roscoe “Jr” Ingram were able to set 7 new records on a 2001 Kawaski 125cc street bike, entry # 851. The fastest speed was an incredible 63+ MPH. Proving again that you don’t have to go really fast to set records and have fun.
The ECTA “Web Slave” Debbie “DahMurf” Heneman had her little 1968 Harley Davidson Sprint 250 out for a couple of runs unfortunately, the little bike must have run lean because there was aluminum on the spark plug and it ended her runs for the weekend. Todd Dross will probably have the little bike, entry # 1301 back out at the next meet.
Mad Dog Motorsports Team mates, Thomas Barker and Richard Tackett, had their Suzuki Busa back out again for the second time this year. They’re still getting use to the course and getting their license upgraded. They’re coming right along with runs in the 199+ MPH range for the entry # 9300. Shouldn’t be long before they have a couple of records and maybe a green hat!
Vincent Hill was back down from D.C. with his bright green 2000 model Kawasaki 1200. Vincent’s best speed of the meet was a fast 182+ mph on the # 482 entry! While Vincent is getting seat time, he’s still looking for his first ECTA record and the way he’s running, should have it before long!
Another new entry was the # 9210 Vespa Scooter of Randall Reusche. The Grose Hosenhangen Racing entry was clocked at a blistering 56+ MPH for the record in P/P 125/2. He even had the factory spare tire mounted in case he had a flat on the course!
The Snart Racing Team had their entry # 7625 a 1998 883cc Sportster back out again, and
as usual, set a new record with the bike. This time it was rider Harry Malphus running a fast 130+ MPH for the new record in MPS/PBF-1000. The Snart Team of Larry Young and Lee Tindall, among several others, always seem to set a few records and have their bikes well maintained.
“In The Middle Racing” entry # 2207, a Honda 250 Rebel, owned and ridden by Thomas Cronan, must have made 25 runs or so. Thomas kept setting the record up in M/F 250/4 and had it to 88+ MPH when he let rider Lee Tindall have a shot at it. Lee was able to coax 90+ MPH out of the little bike for the new record. Another small bike was the unusual entry # 740 of Ed Tilley. It’s a 1982 Morini 500cc V-twin. The unusual bike ran a 97+ MPH speed on a 110+ MPH Record. I’m sure Ed will keep working on it until he’s got the Record!
Last of the bikes is the bright yellow machine of Gregory Town Racing, Rick Denham. The 1990 XCH Harley, entry # 346, was able to up the record in MPS/PBG -1350 to a fast 152+ MPH. This is another rider that seems to set a new record every time out. Shows he’s doing something right. Well, that’s all the Bikes for this meet. Now on to the cars!
For the third straight meet, Bob Hustler took his Hustler Racing NASCAR style T-bird, entry # 849 to a fast speed for cars, at a very fast 210+ MPH with a back door speed of 211+ MPH. This also is the new record for AA/FCT. By the way, this engine and or complete car are for sale! Good Job Bob!
The car point’s race got shook up some with 2 of the top 4 going in the wrong direction! Graeme “Rabbit” Bartils came into this event with the points lead and was looking like the man to beat. He had painted his car a sort of greenish yellow and has a new sponsor. (GMP Diecast Models, out of GA) Oh well, all hell broke loose on the very first run of this meet when something let go in the motor, and he was not able to make the complete run leaving him with only 50 points for the meet. Too bad, hopefully he can repair the car and get back in the race at the next meet!
This opens the door for So-Al racing legend Keith Turk and his highly paid driver, Tonya Hanley. Tonya was able to set the record in B/CFALT at a fast 170+ MPH with the # 462 entry. Ever since Keith and Tonya teamed up they keep getting faster and faster every meet. Rumor has it that the all Alum. Rodeck engine will be installed for the June meet for a B-ville tune up! As for now,

the team is in first place in points.
Jeff Isaacs had his 1969 Camaro, the # 1069 Roll Cage Racing entry, back out again and was able to set the record in B/CBGALT at 159+MPH. Jeff was hoping for more out of the car, but this keeps him in pretty good shape points wise.
Rynd Boys Racing had their 1929 Ford Roadster, entry # 560, running pretty good with a fast pass of 132+ MPH for the new record in D/BFR. Not bad for the old flathead. This keeps Bill and team in the battle and puts another record in the books for the Florida based team.
Brett and Regan Yates had their 1992 Firebird, entry # 252 back out again after suffering transmission problems last meet. This team is getting ready for their first trip to Bonneville this August. This meet they were both able to drive to 180+ MPH and keep their slim hopes alive in the years points race.
Muscle Motorsports, Bob Gribble, had his new 1986 Mercur back out for this second time and the entry # 9213 responded with a fast pass of 184+ MPH, taking the record in B/BGCC. Bob is also getting ready for a trip out west to B-ville! This car is powered by a Buick V-6 and he is working on a Dual Turbo V-6 for it! Good Luck!
Clem Roberts and crew had his beautiful U/DT, entry 4331, out for the first time this year. Clem’s first run netted him an impressive 168+ MPH run and record. After a couple hours in the pits they were towed back to the line and picked up 11 more MPH with a great run of 179+ MPH for the new record in U/DT. I think Clem’s going to make some serious noise this year at Bonneville! Great Job on this project guys!
Another ECTA member getting ready for B-ville is Chuck Panner and his “Second Childhood” 1982 Camaro, entry # 790. For the third straight meet this year Chuck has set a new record, this time it was a fast 156+ MPH in E/BGCC. Chuck gets a little faster each trip down the track!
New to Maxton is the “Reds all Business Coupe Racing”, entry # 1940. This is a ’40 Ford coupe of W.R.Mattei, who’s car is powered by a blown flathead and ran impressive 123+ MPH for the record in XF-BVGC.
Joe Ledford was back at Maxton for the first time in a couple of years. He’s got an all new ’32 Ford Roadster running a small block Chevy in the Street Roadster class. After a couple of passes, Joe set the long standing C/STR record up from 172+ MPH to a fast 176+ MPH run. Not bad at all for the # 55 entry. Joe will also be at
Bonneville looking for a red hat.
Lawrence Saccone had his little Honda sports car back out again and was able to set the record in G/BGMS at 143+ MPH. Not bad at all for the street legal “Force Fed Racing” entry # 9212.
We lost one of our members, Sam Samson, the first of the year in an Automobile accident. He had a beautiful 1934 Ford Comp Coupe racecar, entry # 1034. Well, half of the state of Maine, along with Sam’s wife and son, made the long trip to Maxton with his car and the plans to get a couple of new drivers license for B-ville and Maxton. Both Gary Gustafson and Mel Penttila made passes in the “Maine Barons Racing Team” car and both ended up with “C” license before clutch problems ended their weekend. This car went in the high 190’s at B-ville last year and Sam had just installed a NASCAR style engine before he passed. While there’s no way to replace “Sam”, hopefully this will help in the healing! Good Luck!
Also from Maine, and some of Sam’s old friends, was the new entry # 306, A 1977 Corvette running in the C/FMS class. After a few License passes, Mel Penttila was able to set the record at 163+ MPH. Not bad at all for the first time out!
Bob “Doc” Bergner was back down from Kentucky with his LT-1 Corvette. Bob was at the last meet but didn’t have all the proper safety equipment to go fast and was limited to 125 MPH. Well, he went home and installed a roll bar, and other safety equipment as the rule book states and set the records this meet with a fast pass of 145+ MPH in A/GSS. He also ran a 143+ MPH pass for the new record in A/BGSS, not bad at all for the # 9206 entry. And it was done the right way, by the book!
Philip Franz had his 1987 Camaro, the “Koenig Brothers Racing” entry # 1029 back out again. Philip is still sorting out a few problems but still managed a 148 +MPH run on his own record of 164. He’ll get there before long.
The Stewart Racing Team had their little Briggs powered cart, entry # 665 back out with us and managed a 91+ MPH on their old record of 106+ MPH. There’s only so much you can do with 5HP, but they keep trying and having fun doing so!
Winston Churchill had his hot street Corvette back down from VA for the first time in a couple of years. The entry # 9216 with its 555 cubic inch monster engine had problems and was never able to get a full pass in, to bad because this thing is fast. Better luck next time.
Fred Brodick had his G/PRO, entry # 9211,

2002 Mazda out for a few runs. Fred’s best speed was 105+ MPH on the current 130+ MPH record.
Art Walker, a new member from Alabama, had his street driven 1995 Firebird, entry # 9208 out for his first passes on the Monster Mile. After a couple of passes, he was able to run 129+ MPH for the record in AA/FSS. This car can go faster but will require all the safety equipment to do so. I guess it just depends on how bad Art got the go fast speed bug??
Andy Anderson & wife Tiffany, brought out their good looking 1967 Chevy II for the second time this year. The bright red “Aero Fist Racing” entry # 878 again upped the record in B/GRS to a faster 147+ MPH. This car has got a lot left in it and Andy hopes to get Tiffany a record and maybe a “C” license next month!
Ronald Whitworth had his little “Whitworth & Watson Racing” 1985 Pontiac Fiero, entry # 822, back for the second meet in a row! And for the second meet in a row, the team set a new record. This time they upped the F/MS record to 136+ MPH. Not bad at all for the little 4 cylinder!
Daniel Cooper had his 2002 Camaro, entry # 759, back out for a few time only runs. Daniel kept his speeds in the 120 range, mainly because he lacks the proper safety equipment. He still had a great time by observing the 125 limit and thinking of building his “Real” racecar.
John Madeley had his “Gaint SS Motorsports” 1996 Impala SS, entry # 864 out to play a little this meet. John’s best speed was a fast 145+ MPH pass in the well built and good looking Impala. John listed a 4:10 gear on his entry form, that should have the 350 engine singing through the lights!
Randy Dupree and driver Luke Scanlan had Randy’s “Dupree Racing” 1957 Fiat Comp Coupe, entry # 846 back up from Florida. The neat looking car cracked something in the engine and filled the oil with water. To bad, this thing should fly when they get the bugs worked out!
The last entry is the # 983 of “Satisfied Motorsports” John Maffucci. This is a street driven (From GA) Racecar. This time out the 2003 Ford Mustang was able to run a best speed of 165+MPH in the D/PS class! I would not want to tangle with this thing on the GA back roads! Well that’s all for this meet and I hope I have not left anyone out. Thanks a lot to all our volunteers that helped make this meet a great success! See you all next meet!
Lionel's Corner

As I said in the newsletter, this was a super meet, good weather, good friends, and a safe meet! As usual, a lot of volunteers stepped up to help out with the running of the show. It takes more people than you might think! My personal thanks to each and every one of you! A lot of people are getting ready for the trip out to Bonneville this August; we still have one more meet for you to get your tune up right. Maxton is really great for people to get some laps in so that they don’t tow all the way to Utah to discover a problem that could have already been fixed. I’m happy to be helping Brett and Regan Yates on their Firebird that they bought from me last winter. This will be their first trip out west, and they are really looking forward to it.
It’s real good to see people having fun and enjoying themselves in this land speed sport. Sometimes it’s easy to loose focus on things and to see someone like Brett and Regan enjoying themselves helps out a lot.
I’ve already received several phone calls and E-mails from people that enjoyed this last meet and wanted to thank me and the rest of our volunteers. The real thanks go to the folks that show up and race!
Now on to a couple of small problems, first, please fill out you entry forms with all the information that you can. It really helps when I’m writing the newsletters. Also, use the same name to register, that you have on the membership file. That way we know if you are a member or not and things run a whole lot smoother.
And last, but not least, is the 125 MPH class. Most people heed to the 125 speed limit, some don’t. It’s the ones that don’t that’s going to cause us to drop this class if it keeps up. We don’t want to do that, as most people enjoy it and go on to build real racecars or put the required safety equipment in theirs. Even if you’ve been 200+MPH somewhere else, we still need you to take a 125 MPH ride here just to see what the track lay out is and so forth, it don’t take but a minute and then you can run faster (If you have the required safety equipment) Hopefully one or two people won’t ruin this 125 class for the rest of you. Anyway, I’d find something to bitch about, even if I was hung with a new rope!
Thanks to everyone that helped out!
                    Later,                                         Lionel

Murf’s Law

As some of you may know I’ve been working on a database for the ECTA. It’s being built to house all of the membership, registration, records & points data. It will help the staff keep better records & help us to process & present the results from each meet in a timely manor. A lot of this is going to be transparent to y’all. The reason I’m pointing this out is that some of you have been questioned about current membership & vehicle information. We’ve been testing and tracking data all year and because our records are getting better we sometimes have the need to ask questions to ensure we’re logging the correct information. Please bear with us as we progress forward and be patient with us and our questions. We are working to make a better system and to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
As we test the system we’ve come across a few discrepancies that have the ability to deny participants of records. We don’t want to do that so please keep these things in mind for the coming meets:
  • Make sure you hand in your registration before you run
  • Make sure your membership is current
  • Make sure all of your alternate driver/rider memberships are current
  • The primary driver & class listed on the registration card will be assigned to your first run. If you wish an alternate driver to run first or to run in a different class then a driver or class change MUST be made.
  • Make sure your registration card is filled out as completely and consistently as possible. (If you have the same vehicle number from meet to meet but list a different type or year of vehicle we will be asking why!)
  • Ensure all of your class changes and driver changes are done in registration before attempting to run.
  • If you have a formal name and a nickname make sure we know which appears on your membership card! If you list a driver with a nickname we may think they are not registered which may result in that driver being pulled out of line & sent to the registration tent for clarification.
Thanks for your understanding & cooperation as we continually strive to improve on an already great place to race!      Debbie aka Murf Web Slave & Database guru
Susan's Soapbox

Once again, everyone did a great job of packing out what they packed in. And a special thanks to those of you who picked up after your fellow racers. You were noticed and sincerely appreciated!!
I have had several items in the lost and found section of registration for quite some time now. PLEASE come by and check to see if I have something you are missing.
We've yet to get our new PA system up and running, but hope to do so in the very near future. In the mean time, all the speeds are announced over any standard CB radio on Channel 1 at each meet. In the event that this Ch. was to change, you will be notified at the drivers meeting, or as the need to change arises.
Let me remind you parents, that if you have a child under the age of 18 years, and you wish for this child to race. Then you the parent, must come by in person to the registration desk and sign your child up. This is for the insurance that we MUST have on your child. No Exceptions!
Also, We need to continue to have the Driver or Rider IN PERSON make his own Class change and or Driver Rider change and completely fill out the form line on the clip board. This means that you CAN NOT send your spouse, significant other or child to do this. The driver/ rider must do it in person. And please do not rush, but take your time while doing so. Even the smallest of mistakes can make a big difference, as the points race rolls on in the year.
Let it be said that a True Friend would never ask you to do anything that could not be/should not be done, or that is wrong! It seems that the closer we all become, and as we do start to treat each other like family. That certain ones want to take advantage of this situation, and this is just flat out WRONG! Think about what you are asking of some one, before asking. And if someone is in conversation with someone else, Please remain on your throne and patiently wait your turn. This is just a common courtesy you should remember from long ago.
I'm sorry to have to say, but the local BBQ place that I was so pleased with last month, has let us down. They were not making the kind of big bucks they expected to, in the first two meets they were here, (not to mention one was partly rained out) So they have pulled out on us.
The man, whom was working for the said BBQ place, wants to do our food service work for

himself, so we'll give him a try this next meet. He has said that he will have grilled hamburgers and Hot dogs, and I'm sure that he will do a good job of keeping us all fed.
In other words, if you ever eat BBQ in Laurinburg again, it will not be because I had anything to do with it!!
