ECTA’s April Meet
The second meet of the year has already come and gone. Again, we had rain on Saturday, but were able to get a lot of racing in anyway. Sunday was a very nice day, except for head winds, and a lot of records were either set or broken over the weekend. We also had another very safe meet. Top Speed of the meet was again set by a Suzuki Busa, # 1117 at 215+ MPH! This bike is ridden and owned by Scott “Mr. Motorcycle” Guthrie. I guess last months rumors of him being skeer’d ain’t true! Also, Bob Hustler was able to run a fast 210+ MPH in his Ford Thunderbird, entry # 849 to give the poor ole car guys something to hang their hats on. Congrats to both of these gentlemen!
Not only did Scott Guthrie set Top Speed of the meet, but along with team mates Wayne Pollack and Jay Barker, they accounted for 13 new records! Scott and Wayne where already 200 MPH club members, and they helped Jay into the club with a great run of 204+ MPH! Scott Guthrie Racing also has a lead in the point’s battle for the first time this year. I'm not real sure anybody can catch them, but I guess we'll hold the trophy until the end of the year anyway!

Rick Denham, aboard his Harley # 346 also had a good weekend resetting two records with a top speed of 151+ MPH in APS/PBG-1350. Rick's been racing with us a couple years now and goes faster every meet!
Kathy Henry was also back on her good looking black # 697 Sportster. This bike is sponsored by the Sportster List Race Team and Kathy set her record up from last month a full 10 MPH to a fast 130+ MPH!
Mark Wolniak was running very well also with a new record of 171+ MPH in S/F-1000. That probably puts him at forth or fifth in points. Mark's entry # 698 seems to also improve at every meet. Good Job!
Ed Tilly had his little 2 stroke 80cc Derbi out to run with us. He set 4 new records with this odd bike, the fastest for # 884 was 72+ MPH. I don't know where Ed does his bike shopping, but he's not shown up with anything I can spell yet!!
The O.F.O.S. Team of Jim “Keno / Flapper” Cannon, Ken Weaver, TJ Cannon, Kevin Umphlett, Dale Thomas, Al Dinsmore, Kip Colls and others that would not disclose their names, had 4 entries. All 4 gathered a lot of points but they only came away with one record on entry # 922. Kevin set the S/G-1650 record at a fast 181+ MPH. This use to be an all Harley team, but they only had one “Leaker” with them this trip!
Rosemary Pennell had her little Harley Davidson Sprint 250 back out again, and again the bike, entry # 936 was able to up the M/PG-250/4 record to 79+ MPH. Rosemary's getting a little faster each meet with the Twin Jugs sponsored Sprint.
Another small bike is entry # 2207 of “In The Middle Racing”, Thomas Cronan. This meet Thomas wasback at work on the M/BG-250/4

record and reset the mark 6 times over the weekend with the record now standing at 87+ MPH. Not bad for this “New” 16 year old rider and his 250 Honda “Rebel”.

Paul and Karen Batts had their fast Buell Harley back down from VA and Karen was able to set the APS/PF-1350 record up to a fast 151+ MPH. I don't know if they have worked on the engine or not over the winter, but last year the engine was more or less stock. Not bad at all for the Batts Racing Team and their entry # 2801 Buell.
Entry # 6080, the Snart/EVO Power & Machine Harley was able to set 4 records over the weekend with riders Harry Malphus and Mark Wolniak. Top speed was141+ MPH record in M/PBG-1350. Good job guys! Another Snart Racing entry, # 7625, also was back as usual, and as usual, set a new record. This meet it was rider Lee Tindall running a fast 125+ MPH in the MPS/PF-1000 class. Not bad at all for the 883cc Harley.
Sidney Conn had his # 489 Motto Guzzi running well this meet and was able to set the M/PG-3000 record at a fast 142+ MPH run. Sidney also let Alice Sexton take her first passes at Maxton on the bike and Alice was able to secure a “D” license before the weekend was over.
Steve “Booger” Smith was back out for the first time this year with his 500cc half a Harley (Half the trouble?). The entry # 7117 had a best speed of 107+ MPH and was a touch off the record.
Vincent Hill had his green machine ZX12R Kawasaki back down from DC for some runs in the MPS/G-1350 class. His entry # 482 |

ran fairly well with a best speed of 180+ MPH. Vincent's still got a little ways to go, but he's getting there.
Rich Yancy, who last month ran a super 224+ MPH, had a few problems this meet and was (only?) able to run 214+ MPH. That stood for top speed of a while, until Guthrie's 215+ MPH, but was not what Rich was looking for on his Budwiser red # 8B entry. Rich works in the engine room for some rowdy round guy named Earnhart, Jr. a # 8 Chevy.
Ransom Holbrook had his new Suzuki Busa back out. He had his # 9290 entry
entered in the P/P-1650 class and was able to run a fast 183+MPH on a 187 record. My bet is that he gets it next meet.
Mike “No Muffler, but tired one and now my bike won't start” Shedd also had his Half a Harley 500cc Buell back out again. And again the # 10B entry came up a little short of the record with a best speed of 99+ MPH. Everyone's been ragging Mike about his LOUD pipe, so he bought a new muffler and after putting it on Sunday morning, the bike refused to start! Oh well, back to all that noise I guess! Well, I think that's all the Scooters we had this meet and now its on to the 4 wheelers.
As I mentioned earlier, Bob Hustler had top speed of the meet with a great 210+ MPH record run in his Ford T-bird, entry # 849. Bob set the B/FCT record. He thinks with a carb change and maybe a few other tricks, he can go even faster!
Graeme Bartils AKA: “Rabbit” is leading the points for cars right now in his good looking ‘32 Ford Roadster. Rabbit set the B/FR record at a fast 170+ MPH. The entry # 206 Roadster is powered by an over head cam Northstar engine. |

Last years points Champions, The Shade Tree Racing Team of Frank & Larry Waddell, are trying hard to stay in this years battle for No.1 entry fried another transmission and I think they may be trying a different style transmission at the next race. Anyway, they did set the C/BFMS record at 149+ MPH. Pretty good with a bad trans!

Brett and Regan Yates had their “New” ‘92 Firebird, entry # 252, back out again. This new car still has a few problems to work out as the 5 speed transmission gave up the ghost. Before that happen though, Regan set the AA/BGCC record at a fast 175+ MPH. Brett’s new best buddy, Keith Turk, loaned him a super T-10 which should take care of the problems.
Speaking of Keith, his SO-AL Camaro, entry #462, and driven by Tonya Hanley (Regan Yates sister) set the D/CFALT record at a fast 168+ MPH. Tonya is improving at every race and Keith may have his sites set on another number one plate. Jeff Isaac's is setting records at every event with his trick ’69 Camaro.
The Roll Cage Racing entry # 1069 is also 2nd in points. Jeff set the AA/CGALT record at 164+ MPH. Jeff is looking for 10 more MPH if someone has some handy!
The Rynd Boys Racing ‘29 Ford flathead power Roadster was back and setting records as usual. Bill drove the car to a fast 131+ MPH for the XX/BFR record. Joshua Rynd and Ken Davison also put a few laps on the ole Rod too.
Chuck Panner was back down with his “Second Childhood” ‘82 Camaro, entry # 790. Chuck set his own record up a notch with a great run of 142+ MPH in the E/GALT class. Chuck's |

using a Chevy V-6 and power glide combo in his race car and it seems to be working!
A new entry this meet is the # 822 F/GMS Pontiac Fiero of Whitworth & Watson Racing. Driver Ron Whitworth got the car up to 132+ MPH in a shake down run, which was also good enough for the record. Good job on a brand new car, guys!

Another new entry is the Comp Coupe of Randy Dupree Racing. It's a little Fiat body with Mercury Marine 4cyl. power plant. After several shake down runs, driver Luke Scanlan (Winner of the April 50/50 drawing) was able to roll off a great 145+ MPH for the record in E/GCC. He was on another good run when the parachute came out early and slowed him to a 104+ MPH, still good for another record in F/BFCC. Look for a lot more out of this car!
Andy Anderson was back for the first time this year with his ‘67 Chevy Nova, entry # 878. Andy was able to set the B/GRS Record up to 144+ MPH. Not bad at all for the street legal car!
Tom Bruch was also back for the first time this year and he made the most of it. He had his little 3cyl. powered 1994 Geo Metro running very well and set a total of 5 new records! The fastest speed for entry # 903 was 113+ MPH. You can pick this whole engine up and carry it away with one hand!
Charles Larimer had his Smart As Martha Racing ‘74 Nova Back for the second meet. Entry # 6636 is powered by a 500 cube Cadillac engine. Charles has got a hotter engine he's getting ready to install before long, best speed was a fast 135+ MPH in
A/CBFALT. |
|
Clem Roberts still has not got his U/DT running, but he's been helping son Shane (AKA: Damnit) with his street car effort. This meet, Shane took 3 new records with a best speed of 128+ MPH in F/BGALT. They are talking about taking the No Class Racing entry # 9203 to B-ville!
Bob Bergner brought out his ‘94 model street Corvette, entry # 9206, just to see what's going on at Maxton. He ended up setting a couple of records in the meantime!

Bob Gribble, of Muscle Motorsports, didn't show up until late Saturday afternoon, he had his new Mercury Merkur and his NASCAR T-bird. The Mercury entry # 9213, is an older B-ville car that Bob bought a while back. He's got a Buick V-6 in it. His break in pass was a fast 172+ MPH. Good for the record in D/BGCC. Bob's hoping to take his car to Bonneville this year. Good Luck!
Philip Franz had his ‘87 Camaro back out to play for the first time this year, and while he did not up his record with the #1029 entry, he came close with a 164+ MPH pass.
Payton Collie was back down with his 1964 Chevy Impala. Last year he had the stock 283, this year he's added a roll bar and a 500” Cadillac engine. The #9207 entry ran 118+ MPH in testing and should have some more left.
Duncan & Nicholas Stewart had their little Steward Racing kart, entry # 665 running pretty good with a best speed of 90+ MPH. Not fast enough to break their own record, but not bad.
Well, that about raps it up for this meet. Thanks a lot to our many Volunteers and Race participants. We had a lot of people step up and help out. As usual, please remember our Troops |

Lionel's Corner
You might think that I would run out of BS to write about in this little corner, but just when I think I've seen it all, a couple of people come along and prove me wrong. I hope that I don't sound like your preacher, mother, wife, daddy, etc. But we CAN NOT have anyone on this race course under the influence of alcohol, PERIOD!! If you want to drink a beer, please feel free to, but park your race bike or car. This will force us to do something that we sure as hell don't want to do, such as suspend the Driver, Rider, Owner. Remove all points and records, etc. So PLEASE don't make us show our hand on this one.
Enough of the bad. I would like to thank everyone that helped set the course up and get it swept off Thursday and Friday. It means that we can Tech cars and bikes a little earlier on Friday and get people ready to go. If you are building a new car, or getting ready to go to Bonneville, let me know. Maybe I can put something in the next |

newsletter. If it keeps raining, I guess we can take a dang ship out there!
See Ya Later! Lionel

*MEMBERS: Please remember to show your current membership card, and avoid paying the $5.00 charge at the gate.
*All vehicles are to be turned off ASAP in the Registration/Impound area.
*It is a requirement from now on, that ALL fields of information on the Driver/Rider and or Class Change clipboards be completely filled out, and done so in the presence of myself or Lionel Williams. This will cut down on any confusion that can arise when someone may have a new record.
*Located in this newsletter is a form for each Driver/Team to fill out for our new Radio Announcer Jon Wennerberg (from way up north). Please fill in as much info as possible and do your best to fill 'em out legibly and with lots of information. A skimpy word or two here and there isn't much to go on when you're trying to fill a couple of minutes air time, and lots of stuff written down allows the announcer to say a little bit this time, save something else for the next run, and so on. The more stuff, the better. Susan AKA “Flipper” will have extra forms at the Registration desk, or feel free to visit Radio Announcer Jon Wennerberg for more info.
*I am very pleased to announce that on Saturday & Sunday at each meet for the rest of the race season, “Smithfield's BBQ” will be at the track. The following will be offered: Starting at 7:30AM “Smithfield's” Coffee can be found at Registration
From 10AM - 2:00PM, BBQ Sandwich $2.75, Hot Dogs $1.50, Tea $1.00 (Tea comes in Northern or Southern style, your choice.) Side items of Potato Salad and Slaw are also available.
*Last but not least... You may be interested to know that Terry Young out of the SNART Racing corral has a great web site. You or your favorite race team may just be on this web site too! Check his photo website out and see!! www.summitphotonc.com
Thanks, Susan

Safety and Classification … it’s in the rules.
Now may be a good time to reiterate a point that the tech inspectors and impound have been trying to make. Tech inspection is for safety, impound is for classification. Just because the Tech Inspector says you are safe to make a pass down the track, it does not mean that impound (or your fellow racers) will agree that you are properly classified and legal to run in your chosen class. It is up to you to read the class rules, ask your questions ahead of time and ensure you are in the correct class. Also, please ensure that you register with a complete & valid class and that the same class appears on your vehicle. That goes for class changes as well! If you change the class on paper you must also change the class on your vehicle. Now we all know that maybe this or that wasn’t checked in the past and maybe some things haven’t been caught but don’t count on it in the future. If everything is not in order you may not be granted the record you worked so hard to obtain. Improvements are being made to the system every meet, now would be a good time to double your work.
One other observation, many race vehicles have been seen being operated under power without the operator being in the required full race gear. Yes, we’ve heard it all. So-n-so did it, why can’t I. Why, because it’s against the rules! If you don’t like the rule I’m sure a change can be arranged. We can be just like Bonneville and require that ALL vehicles MUST be towed. It’s your choice, suit up or tow, it’s a simple concept. These rules are made to keep people safe! We’ve had a car fire at low speed on the track, who’s to say that couldn’t have happened in the pit? As well we’ve had a low speed spill on a motorcycle. Every such incident takes time to resolve & may require emergency crew assistance. With the number of racers increasing with each meet all that does is delay the racing even more. We’re all in this for the sport, lets think about each other as well!
It’s often said, you’re either part of the problem or part of the solution, thanks to those who have made the effort to be part of the solution. |
