The first meet of the year has come and gone. It sure was good to see everyone again and to get the racing season started! Even though the weather looked bad, we still had over Sixty entries making the trip to Maxton. The sky opened up about 9:00 am Saturday morning for a quick, but heavy shower, several teams sent their tow vehicles out to help dry off the track and after a couple of hours we were ready to go. From 12:30 PM until 6:00pm we had over 150 safe, fast runs. Several records fell and several new records were set. Fast time of the meet was the Yancy Racing Suzuki at a blistering fast 224+ MPH. Robert Hustler also ran a super fast 208 MPH in his Ford Thunderbird!
We had our ECTA annual Banquet Saturday night and about 160 people came out for the Awards and Dinner. More on the Banquet later. Unfortunately, Sunday morning we awoke to heavy, cold, rain and it never let up. To bad, but hopefully this will have the rain out of the way for the rest of the year!
Like I mentioned earlier, fast time of the meet went to Rich Yancy abroad his fast, Budwieser Red, Suzuki Busa. The entry #815 first set the record in S/BF-3001 at a fast 218 MPH. Then he upped it to the 224 MPH Blast that set the record and Top Speed of the meet. I would guess that Rich has spent a lot of time and money on his engine program over the winter as this is a big improvement over last year. Rich also starts the year off # 1 in points. Good going, Rich!
George Crim came down to pick up his hardware for winning the Number 1 plate for the 2002 race season. He brought along his bike “Road Kill”, sponsored by the Sportster List Race Team, and set two more records with the impressive Harley. His best speed was a fast 153+ MPH in the A/PF-1350 class. By the way, this bike is for sale at a very good price! Last
years number 2 plate holder, Todd Brooks of the Double Busa Team, was also on hand to run. Todd teched his bike in and then helped out at the start line all day Saturday, which means he didn't ever get to run. Thanks Todd, Hopefully you will be able to run next meet! Guys and Gals like this are what make this whole thing work!
New rider Thomas Cronan, had his little Honda 250cc Rebel running in the M/G-250/4 class. The #2207 entry set the record at 81+ MPH and this young man really seemed to be enjoying himself. Good Job Thomas!
Shammas Motorcycle Performance was represented by two fast entries. Bob Shammas rode his very well prepared Kawasaki 1000 to a new class record in both APS/BF-1000 and APS/BG-1000. The #9201 entry had a best speed of 218+ MPH. This is a 1000cc motorcycle NOT built by Suzuki guys! Very good job, Bob! Team mate, Jaime Barden, was on another Kawasaki. This one was out to 1052cc and was running in a 1350 class. Jaime’s best speed was a fast 199 plus on the #9202 entry. Who says cows can't fly?
Sidney Conn of Cooked Goose Racing was back down with us on one of his Moto Guzzi motorcycles. He was able to set the record up to a fast 151+ MPH on his #489 entry, that's nearly 10 MPH better than the old record!

Terry Cruse is one of our north of the boarder members who try to make it down to Maxton at least once a year. He gave me a call on Monday before the meet to let us know he was on the way. He said it took him 5 hours to get through the Boarder! Anyway, his good looking Harley was able to set the MPS/PBG-

1650 Record up to a fast 144+ MPH! The #424 entry runs under the Hyks Racn Banner. Hope you can make a couple of more meets this year, Terry.
Carl’s Speed Shop was back out with us again and had one of their Drag Race Bikes modified to run in the A/PBF-3000 class. The #9200 entry, with Carl's son, Doug Morrow aboard upped the record to a very fast 173+ MPH. Carl says he's building a purposely built bike to run at Maxton. GOOD!!
Mark “Mr. Clean” Wolniak of Wolniak Racing was running well this meet. The 1000cc Suzuki was able to run a fast 177+ MPH on an open record. This should put the #698 entry well into the points race. Mark's Gal Pal, Kathy Henry, a new rider at Maxton, was aboard a Sportster List Race Team Harley and was able to set a couple of records with a best speed of 120+ MPH on the #697 entry. This run also puts her in good shape in the points race too.
The “Don't Be Scared” racing team was back out at Maxton with a couple of entries. The first was entry # 985 of Joe Gaudette. He was running in the APS/BG-750/4 class and set the record up just a little over 1MPH to 153+ MPH. Team member, Bergie Frazier, Jr. 200 MPH Club member, was back on a sharp 2001 Kawasaki ZX12R Motorcycle. Bergie had the #915 entry entered in the P/P-1650 class. While he didn't set a record this time out he still ran plenty quick with a best run of 181+ MPH.
Twin Jugs Racing had a couple of entries in the Hotly contested 250cc push rod class. First is the entry #936 of Rosemary Pennell’s. She first brought the bike down last year and set a couple of records. The good looking little Harley Sprint set the M/PG-250/4 record up to 78+ MPH. Good going Rosie! Debbie Heneman, ECTA’s web slave, had her new 1968 Harley Sprint out for some shake down runs. Todd Dross, who built both bikes, gave it a couple of test runs and all look's well. The 1301 entry went 82+ MPH on the second run and whenever Debbie gets to ride it, it should be record setter.
The SNART Racing Team, from Asheville, NC was back out with us again. Larry Young's entry #7625 was entered in the MPS/PG-1000 class and rider Lee Tindall was to up the record to 128+ MPH. Not bad for the first meet! Don Thigpen was also aboard a SNART Racing/Evo Power Harley. The #6080 entry had

a top speed of 120+ MPH and is still working out some of the bugs. Should improve next meet, but still a good run.
“Mr. Motorcycle” Scott Guthrie showed up with at least a 7 bike team. Riders Jay Barker and Wayne Pollack both set records. Jay was able to set a total of 3 new records aboard entry #584, 750cc Suzuki. His fastest pass was 168+ MPH in the MPS/F-750 class. Wayne, aboard Entry #21, also a Suzuki this one a Haybusa 1300, was able to set the APS/F-1350 record up to 205+ MPH. This leaves the old man, Scott, who for the first time ever, as far as I know, did not set any records. None as in 0. Talk around the track is that he's scared! I think it was just bad timing on the down pour we had Sunday. Time will tell. by the way, Scott's still in pretty good shape points wise.
The O.F.O.S. Team had 3 entries in this first meet. Ken Weaver traded in his Harley for a Suzuki Busa. He was able to get 174+ MPH out of the #922 entry. More to come! Jim “Keno” Cannon's son “TJ” was on a 1987 750 Suzuki. While he didn't set any records aboard the # 1241 entry, he did gain a few points. The last OFOS member is Kevin Umphlett on his 1986 Suzuki 750. Kevin managed 145 MPH out of the bike, which was not good enough for a record. How ever it puts some points on the board for the #1058 entry.
Rick Denham was back up from GA on his 1990 Harley, entry #346 for a few runs. Rick's best speed was a fast 146+ MPH in MPS/PBG-1350. James Hansen was on his 1999 Suzuki Haybusa, entry #886 and was able to crank out a fast 197+ run. James is looking for a green 200 MPH Club hat and is getting closer every time out!

Mark Day had his Kawasaki ZX12, entry #358 running well in the MPS/G-1350 class. Mark's best speed was a fast 190+ MPH. Not good enough for the record, but still plenty fast.
George Leiby had his Honda 900 CBR back out again. George had his entry # 879 entered in the P/P-1000 Class and had a best speed of 151+ MPH. He didn't get the record, but he did get his “C” license!
Ken Munnings was on a 1999 Buell H.D. and had the #9205 entered inthe M/PG-1350 class. Ken's best speed was 127+ MPH on the Joe Thomson owned Harley. They will get faster with time!
Thomas Barker has his good looking 2001 Suzuki Haybusa our for the first time, and while he was limited to 175 Max speed still had a good time aboard this #9300 entry. He will be much faster at the next meet.
Tim Haig brought his Kawasaki ZX-12R over from Tennessee for his first trip to Maxton. He had the #9234 entry entered in the APS/F-1650 class. He had a couple of runs in the 201+ MPH range. Very good for a first timer!
Rob Bush had his Fish's Customs 1000cc Suzuki out with us. Rob entered the #1124 in the MPS/F-1000 class and was able to run 199+ MPH. Not the record, but VERY FAST! Jesse Feedback had his little Kawasaki 400, entry # 586 entered in the M/G-400/4 class. Jesse's best speed was 79+ MPH on the new entry, but he's getting seat time and will go faster later.
Guy Caputo of Tiger Racing and DragBike.com was back down with us again on his good looking Suzuki Haybusa. Guys best speed was a fast 199+ MPH on the #3135 entry. He mentioned that he burnt up a cylinder head but will be back later in the year for a shot at a green hat. Guy has a very neat website http://www.dragbike.com check it out. He will have the Maxton Bike Records posted along with a lot of 1/8 and 1/4 mile stuff. Ransom Holbrook, one of our car guys, showed up with a new Suzuki Haybusa. He had his entry #9290 entered in the P/P-1650 class where his best speed was a fast 180+ MPH. When he gets use to two wheels, he's speed will improve.
Ed Tilly had his unique 1982 Morini 500cc Motorcycle back down with us. He had the #740 entry entered in the MPS/PG-500/4 class.
Ed's best speed was 92+ MPH. Not what he was looking for, but a start anyway.
The Lone Eagle Racing Team was represented by Mike “NO Muffler, but NEEDS ONE” Shedd, as “Dad” Land had not finished putting the finishing touches on his worlds fastest “naked” Iron Head Sportster. Mike had his #788 entered in the MPS/PG-500/4 class where he ran a best of 99+ MPH. He'll get that record someday! Chris “Dad” Land volunteered himself for inspections and record certification all day Saturday. Thanks Dad! Well, that's all the bikes for the first meet. Now, on to the 4 wheelers!
Robert (Bob) Hustler received our fastest car of the year award in 2002 with a super 206+ change our of his NASCAR style Ford Thunderbird. He entered #849 in A/FCT and set the record up to a fast 208+ MPH for fast car speed of this meet and well on the way for fastest of the year again. Oh yeah, he also got into the ECTA 200 MPH club too. Congrats Bob!
Last years points champions, The Waddell Brothers (Larry & Frank) traded in their Championship Volvo for a 1990 Mazda RX7 which they are running in the Modified Sports class. The #1 car set the record and gathered a big load of points with a best speed of 156.163 in B/FMS. This with the transmission going south. They are going to try and become our first repeat champions, Good Luck!

Graeme “Rabbit” Bartils had this #206 1932 Ford Roadster back up from GA. This is a very good looking car with a Cadillac North Star Engine for power. Rabbit had run right on the D/GR record last year but could not better the mark. Well, over the winter he worked hard on the North Star and it paid off with a great run of

166+ MPH for that record. He then entered D/FR and ran a great 174 MPH for the fuel record. Great Job, Rabbit! One of Rabbits buddies, Jeff Isaacs with his roll cage racing 1969 Camaro also had a good weekend. The #1069 Camaro was first entered in A/GRS where he upped the record to a fast 162+ MPH. He then switched classes to A/CGALT to set that record at an even faster 164+ MPH. Moving right along for a ‘69 Camaro. Another friend of Rabbits, John Maffucci, brought out his 2002 Mustang Cobra for a few runs. The Satisfied Motorsports entry #983 was entered into Pro/Supercharged classes and took 2 records with a fast speed of 163+ MPH. Oh yeah, he drove it up here from GA and back home. Still another friend of “Rabbits” Larry Shepeard, entered his #9204, 2002 Lincoln in B/PS and got the record with a pass of 106+ MPH, he's got a nice Pro Street type Mopar at home that he owns a couple of other records with. Rabbits got some fast friends!
Don Biglow had his #938 ‘32 Ford Roadster back down with us for the second time. While Don had his problems with the car when he burnt up the clutch, he was still able to set the A/BGR record at 121+ MPH. I'm sure Don will improve on that before long.
Chuck Panner was also back with his “82 Camaro, entry #790, for a few runs in the E/GALT class. He was able to set the record up with a fast 141+ MPH pass. He probably had more left, but the rain interfered.
Dick Jurkowski made his yearly trip to Maxton a good one when he entered his Lone Star Land Speed Racing ‘68 Camaro #729 in the B/CGALT Class and left with the record at 138+ MPH. See ya next year, Dick!
Land Speed Racing Legend, Keith Turk had his #462 white Camaro back out with his cast iron “D” engine. Bonneville, El Mirage, and Australia Salt Flats racer Doug Odom had flown our to spend a day or two with the Legend and ended up in Keith's car for the break in pass. Break in he did, as Doug went 157+ MPH for the D/GALT Record. Tonya Hanley then got in the car and had couple of small problems which Keith fixed, but then came the rain. Regardless, SHE is still the 8th place winner in the 2002 points race!
Clem Roberts didn't get his beautiful diesel truck back together in time for the first
meet, but he and son Shane “Dammit” Roberts entered #9203, a new Hyundai Tiburon in a couple of Super Street Classes. Shane broke two records with a best speed of 122+ MPH with the new entry. Good going Dammit! Clem also had his new Cushman 3 wheeler that, while protested before entry, and barred from any known class, was still a big hit with his runs at Maxton. You just have to see it to believe it. Anyway, no one was hurt.
Another new entry was the car #6636 of Charles Larimer. Charles had the 1973 Nova entered in the AA/BFSS class and was able to set the record at 133+ MPH. Not bad for this first time out!

Lawson Bilhardt and crew made it back down after a long winter with his #863 Black Bird SC Racing 1990 Model T-bird. They've been working right along on this car for at least a couple of years now and the car usually improves at every meet. This was no exception as Lawson upped the E/PS Record to a fast 148.839 MPH.
Kris Henderson came back down from Nashville with his entry #1062 Henderson Racing 1959 4 door Jaguar. This is a super neat street car and is fast too! Kris was entered in the C/GSS where he was able to set the record up to a fast 163+ MPH.
Stephen Shepherd was back out with his #5500 VW Jetta and was running in G/BFSS where he was able to set the record up to 106+ MPH. Stephen's working on an old road race AMC AMX that should be a neat car when he brings it out.
Bill Rynd, Ken Davidson and Joshua Rynd had their entry #560 ‘29 Ford Roadster

back up from Florida. Bill was able to set the XF/BFMR Record at a fast 133+ MPH. I think this is their fastest speed to date with the real ‘29 and flathead power.
The BWT Team had their D/GMS Sports Corvette back out again. The #1197 entry went a fast 172+ MPH on its only run of the weekend. This car is for sale and could possibly win this years points battle. Any takers?
Brett and Regan Yates had their new 1992 Firebird out for the first time. After a few new car bugs were worked out, the #252 entry went 177+ MPH on a 179 MPH record on its second pass. Brett thinks there is a lot more left. He and Regan will probably be sitting records at future meets.
Nicholas Stewart has his little Briggs powered cart out running again. The #665 entry was running on a 106 record and he only managed 94 MPH this time out. Still not bad for a lawn mower.

Bob Gribble had his Muscle Motorsports entry #613 NASCAR T-bird running pretty good. He and part time driver Bridgetti Krompass ran near the 200 mark, but did not better any of their numerous records.
Dennis Zainfeld and Jay Bell had a new ‘74 Ford Courier running in the C/MMP class. The #238 entry had a top speed of 150+ MPH, not bad for an all new truck. Well, that's all folks.
Had it not rained we would have had more entries and more records. Still, we really can't complain to much. The March meet is also our annual Awards Banquet. We had another large crowd this year and it was a lot of fun and was just plain good to have everyone together. You may notice in this type of
racing that there are a lot of families and old friends racing, and helping one another. I'm pretty sure that no other form of motorsports brings together as many different walks of life as does Land Speed Racing. It's a very neat thing to see and be a part of.
Thanks to everyone that helped out, Susan Miller did a lot of the foot work for the Banquet, with food, and so forth, Thanks. Clem Roberts had a DJ come in and spin records. Thanks. The Top Ten in both Cars and Bikes were rewarded, also Top Speeds of the year and Person of the year. All in all, just a great time. Thanks to all our Volunteers who helped out last year and also starting off this year. Also, please remember the Volunteers and Soldiers that we have over seas. I'm afraid that 90 have lost their lives (as I write) so that we may have this thing called Freedom. Don't forget them, and shake their hand whenever you get a chance. See ya’ll in April.
