Website Migration

Please note that we will be moving the server for the ECTA website in the next week or so.  This should be relatively seamless from the users’ point of view, except that we may experience some period of shutdown.  We can’t predict how long that may be, and it could be from minutes to a couple of days.  After the migration, we will have the same internet address, and the website should look the same and have the same functionality.  So if you try to come here and can’t find us, all we can say is be patient and try back again later.  Thanks in advance for your patience.

Season Finale Is in the Books

The Season Finale is over, and it was a delightful meet by all accounts, notwithstanding the rain delay.  For complete results, click here, or follow the links from the main navigation bar at the top of the home page. Pictures from the meet have been added to the gallery. Follow the link from the navigation bar above.

It is bittersweet that we report on the close of the 2008 season. Our special thanks to all of the volunteers who made this meet and this season one to remember.  We offer special thanks to Deb Dross, Donna Timney and Tonya Turk for their late night work on Sunday night following the meet to get the results posted promptly.

As we go into the winter hiatus, we wish you all a healthy and happy break, and we hope to see you again in April.  Check in from time to time because we have some feature articles planned to entertain you.

Pictured above is the Centimark Mustang entry, which earned driver Steve Benyo his coveted green hat and induction into the ECTA 200MPH Club, with a best speed of 228.656 mph.  Congratulations, Steve and crew.  Also, congratulations to Mark Weiler and Dennis Zainfeld on their induction into the “2″ Club (not pictured).

Dave Owen Memorial

Also, congratulations to Mark Weiler and Dennis Zainfeld on their induction into the “2″ Club (not pictured).         On September 27, 2008 we lost a good friend, Dave Owen, as a result of an accident during competition at Maxton.  For more information about Dave, including how you can make a donation to help his family, follow the Dave Owen Memorial Page link on the sidebar on this page or click here.

We wanted to share this recent message from Dave’s family:

The boys and I would like to thank our “Racing Family” for all the Love and support you have all shown to us. I don’t know how we would make it through this difficult time without you all.  We want to wish you all a Happy Holiday season full of Joy, and a Healthy and Happy New Year! Looking forward to spring, and hope to see you all in April.Much Love,Lauren, Josh and Jake

Countdown to Season Finale

Come join us on October 25 - 26 for racing at the Maxton airport. This is the last meet of the 2008 season, and the season champions for both cars and motorcycles will be decided. This has historically been one of the larger meets of the season, so get there early and stake out a prime pit spot.

As always, track set-up will begin on Friday, October 24, and extra hands are always welcome, so bring your work gloves. As time permits and staff is available, tech inspection will begin on Friday afternoon and continue on Saturday. If you are a rookie, you must attend rookie orientation at 5pm on Friday if you want to run Saturday morning. Other rookie orientations will take place through the weekend as needed.

See you there.

June Meet is in the Books

The Bonneville Tune-Up Meet is over, and it was an action-packed meet. For complete results, click here, or follow the links from the main navigation bar at the top of the home page. Pictures from the meet have been added in the gallery. Follow the link from the navigation bar above.

Our thanks to all of the volunteers who made this a spectacular meet. And special thanks to Deb Dross, Donna Timney and Tonya Turk for their late night work on Sunday night following the meet to get the results posted promptly.

As we go into the summer break we wish you all a fun and productive summer. We hope to see you in September (. . . wait, isn’t that a song?)

Pictured above is the lovely (and freshly built) 33 Ford entry of Charles Venable. This car set a new record of 126.98 in E/CGALT class. Congratulations.(posted 07/1/08)

Countdown to Bonneville Tune-up Meet

We’re now less than a week away from the June ECTA meet. We refer to the June meet as the “Bonneville Tune-Up Meet” because many of our racers make the trip to Bonneville in the summer and early fall for one or more of their meets, and this is their last opportunity to do speed runs before the trek out West.Come join us on June 27 - 29 at Maxton for this meet. This has historically been one of the smaller meets of the season, which translates into a more relaxed atmosphere and, perhaps more importantly for the participants, more runs.Temperatures are predicted to be in the 90s, so bring your hot weather clothing and plenty of sunscreen. See you there!

May 2008 Meet in the Books The weather was beautiful. Attendance was smaller than in recent meets, which made for more runs per entrant. Speeds were fast and many a record fell. The top speed of the meet went to Charlie Anstaett on his DaveO-tuned Suzuki Hayabusa turbo bike at 256.798 mph.Three new members were inducted into the ECTA 200 MPH Club. All three were on motorcycles, and all three were running unfaired. Congratulations to Dean Sabatinelli, Debbie Dross and Phillip C. Campbell. Unfortunately, the meet ended a bit early on Sunday because of extremely high gusting cross winds. The meet had thinned out quite a bit by that point, so the disappointment was minimal. The meet results have been updated and can be viewed by clicking here.

Countdown to 2008 Season Opener

The 2008 Season Opener, April 5-6, is upon us. The track will be open on Friday, April 4, for Registration and Inspection. Friday is also a good time to come and catch up with old friends, many of whom we have not seen since last year, and to stake out a prime pit area.

There are a record number of pre-entries for this meet, so in establishing your pit area, please be respectful of your fellow racers and don’t take more space than you need. For Rookies, Friday is a good time to get acclimated to the track and to meet new folks. And don’t forget there will be a mandatory Rookie Orientation on Friday at 5PM.

(To the right are ECTA officials, Keith Turk, Tonya Turk, Donna Timney and Joe Timney.)

As you know, at this meet we will also be running the fourth annual Top Speed Challenge, sponsored by Hot Rod Magazine. The rules for the challenge are the same as last year’s, and can be seen here. We are proud to say that Editor in Chief of Hot Rod Magazine, Rob Kinnan, and photographer and contributor, Brian Lohnes, will be at the meet. They and the magazine have been great fans and supporters of the ECTA, so we want to make them feel most welcome. When you see them, step up and say hello. (I have a sneaking suspicion they will be delighted to talk cars, and probably motorcycles as well.)

(Shown to the left are last year’s Top Speed Challenge jacket winners, Dave Matyjasik and Sonny Parks.)

As always, all motorcycle and automobile member competitors are welcome at the meet, so come and get ready to go fast. We look forward to seeing you. (posted 03/23/08)

. . and in Other ECTA News

As usual, the Annual Awards Banquet will be held the weekend of the April meet. It will be held at the Grove at Pine Acres (Pine Acres Lodge) on Saturday, April 5, with cocktails commencing at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $20.00 per person and will be available at the registration trailer during the meet. Make your plans accordingly. We hope to see you all there. In other news, over the winter the ECTA completed extensive track repairs and erected a new, bigger and higher tower, and the track has never been in better shape. So we are ready to run.

Also, please note that there have been a few corrections to the printed 2008 Rulebook. Please check them here.

June Results Are Posted

At long last, and not without great effort on the part of our Meet Results mavens, Tonya Turk and Deb Dross, the June meet results have been posted. Perhaps a little explanation is necessary in light of the inordinate delay. At the meet, because of a computer meltdown, the electronic version of the meet results was completely lost. The backup was only a paper copy. That necessitated completely reconstructing the meet, keystroke by keystroke. This monumental task was exacerbated by some other computer glitches that surfaced during this process. Tonya and Deb toiled over these as well. I know many of the loyal ECTA following were annoyed and distressed, but this delay was unavoidable. Instead of being mad at them, next time you see Tonya and/or Deb, congratulate them on their hard work. They deserve it.(posted 7/31/07)

Bonneville Tune-up Meet is in the Books

The Bonneville Tune-Up meet was a small (relatively), but exciting and historic meet. For now, here are a few of the weekend’s historic results. Sudbury, Ontario’s Trillium Muir ran 207+ MPH on an unfaired bike, to gain entry into the ECTA’s 200 MPH Club. She broke Walt Kudron’s record to do so, and Walt was gracious enough to applaud (literally and vigorously) her achievement at her induction ceremony. In addition to being the reigning fastest woman on an open wheeled motorcycle, an honor that she captured at the last meet at 218 MPH, she is (and always will be) the first woman to gain induction into a recognized LSR 200 MPH club in the United States on an open wheeled motorcycle. To add a little sweetener, her partner in Nickel City Racing, Jody Leveille, ran 220+ MPH, also unfaired, to make his the fastest unfaired bike ever to run at Maxton.Tom Schaefer, our reigning points champion from last year and the ECTA current points leader, ran an astounding 167+ MPH on his Hayabusa sidecar bike, which makes him the fastest sidecar ever to run at Maxton.Congratulations to all these competitors for their achievements.(posted 6/30/07)

May 2007 Meet Results

The May meet is in the books, and a good time was had by all. The results from the May meet have been posted here. Go to Meet Results on the navigation bar at the top of this page to see for yourself. An enormous thanks is in order to the “Babes-in-a-Box” for these. Tonya, Donna and Deb slaved into the night on Sunday to get you early results. Not enough can be said for our dedicated Webslave, Deb (”Murf”), for coming back from the hospital after her “get-off” on Saturday, to work, broken collar bone and all, on the meet results and get them up on this site for you all to see, in near record time. She was, at 212+ mph, the fastest woman on two wheels for a while. More on that later. Many thanks to her and the others.(posted 5/22/07)

New Time Schedule

Please note that there will be some revisions to the time schedule for the March meet. You can see the full revised schedule here. In summary, the changes are:- The Drivers’ Meeting will be held at 8:30 AM on Saturday. This will allow us to get started racing promptly at 9 AM.- Rookie Orientation will be held on Friday at 5:00 PM and another session at 11:30 AM on Saturday. All new competitors and anyone who has not competed at Maxton in the past three years must attend one of these meetings before being allowed down the track. So for rookies, it is important to understand that if you do not attend the Friday afternoon meeting, you will not be able to compete until Saturday afternoon.- There will be a short lunch break from 11:30 AM until Noon on Saturday. This is primarily to give our staff a short break and a chance to re-fuel their bodies. This will also accommodate the second Rookie Orientation.(posted 2/21/07)

Updated October Results

OK, so we’re not perfect. It turns out that a small handful of records were dropped from the meet results in October and, accordingly, did not make it into the cumulative records and points. We’ve now updated all the records. Thanks to the racers who brought this to our attention.(posted 11/26/06)

Maxton 2007 Meet Schedule Finalized

The 2007 meet schedule has been made final, and it is as follows:

  • March 31 - April 1
  • May 19 - 20
  • June 23 - 24
  • September 22 - 23

October 20 - 21Note that the June meet was moved ahead a week from the previously announced tentative schedule, because it was felt the later date might conflict with Independence Day (July 4th) events. (updated 11/08/06)
