Q: Are “pit passes” available?

A: Pit passes as such are not separately issued.  All admission is general admission, however, this includes the opportunity to roam the pit area. We do ask that all safety rules be strictly obeyed and that you be courteous and respectful to the racers and their property. Feel free to observe, chat and ask questions, but remember, they are there to race, so try not to get in the way.

Q: Can we picnic or barbecue at Maxton?

A: Yes, feel free to bring whatever picnic supplies you need for you, your family and your friends. Q: Is there camping available on-site?

A: Tent camping is available at the track, and campers and RVs are welcome. No advance reservations are taken, but so far we have never run out of room. Especially if you are tent camping, be prepared because there are few amenities (no hook-ups, flush toilets or showers), but there are portable toilets and potable water on the grounds.

Q: What happens if there is bad weather?

A:  For safety reasons, we do not race if it is raining or the track is wet from a recent rain.  The good news is that the track dries fairly quickly, so even if racing is interrupted by a passing shower, it often takes only a short while to dry the track and resume racing.  Also, we do not race if there are high wind conditions, in the judgment of the track officials.  The weather is often changeable, and often when the track is shut down for wind, it is only for a short period of time.

Q:  As a spectator, what should I bring with me?

A:  That’s really up to you.  Remember, creature comforts are at a minimum.  There is limited bleacher seating, so you may want to bring a folding camp-chair.  Food is available for sale at the track, but you may want to pack a lunch and bring your own liquid refreshments.  Just like any other warm weather, outdoor event, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and an umbrella are good ideas as well.  The timing tower announces the ongoing results on a CB radio, so you might enjoy the event more if you have a hand-held CB radio. Then of course, your camera and binoculars might make your stay more enjoyable.

Q:  Can I ride my bicycle or unlicensed personal vehicle (pit bike, golf cart or 4-wheeler) at the track?

A:  Yes, with some limitations.  You must obey all traffic safety rules applicable to motorized vehicles, and unlicensed personal vehicles may only be operated by (i) persons holding a driver’s license or (ii) over the age of 14 AND under the direct supervision of an adult.  Proper safety clothing must be worn at all times (for example, a helmet on a motorcycle or scooter).

Q:  Do you have handicapped parking?

A:  Not specifically designated as such, but there is plenty of convenient parking, and the grounds are generally open and level, so wheelchair access should not be a problem.

Q:  Is there anything for kids to do?

A:  Well, not specifically.  Many of our racers and spectators bring their children, and for the most part they seem to enjoy the ambiance – watching the racing and hanging around in the pit area looking at the vehicles.  All children under 14 must be under the direct control and supervision of an adult at all times.

Q:  Where is the best place to watch the races from?

A:  You’ll decide that for yourself after you’ve been to an event, but the favorite places from which to watch the activities seem to be the bleachers looking out over the finish line, or the grass near the starting line.  Of course, spectators are welcome to walk in the pits and visit the racers and view the race vehicles.  Most of the racers will be happy to talk to you and answer your questions.  All we ask is that you observe safety precautions, respect their property, and remember that they are competing and may need some space and quiet to work and otherwise prepare.

Q:  Can I take pictures at the event?

A:  Absolutely.  The viewing area near the finish line is fairly far from the track, so you will want to have a long telephoto lens if you want to take pictures there.  A normal, wide angle or short telephoto lens will work fine in the pits or near the starting line.  Have fun and send us your best shots!

Q:  I have a pretty fast car.  Can I drive it on the track?

A:  We know you would love to, but the answer is “no.”  All competing vehicles are carefully prepared and inspected before being allowed on the track.  We simply cannot take the chance in letting personal vehicles on the track, at any speed.  (Besides our insurance carrier would not like it, and him we aim to please.)
